I love kind of nudging and nurturing them along and I kind of feel like I’m tucking them in for a cozy little nap (before I cut, fry, and eat them). Yes, I realize my square is not really a square. Sprinkle a baking sheet with all-purpose flour… While the dough is kneading, begin bringing a large pot of water (a little over 2 quarts) to a boil. The dough should be smooth but tacky (again…I couldn’t have said it better!) Increase the speed to medium and allow it to knead for 2 minutes. Add enough flour so the dough comes together off the bottom of the bowl. Mix on low until there aren’t any white spots remaining (see? That’s a line straight from the book and I love how specific it is!). Switch the paddle attachment for the hook attachment and add the remaining dry ingredients. Add approximately 1/3 of the dry ingredients mixture and mix on low until blended and then add another 1/3 of the dry ingredients and mix until combined. The shortening won’t be completely combined, but it will be broken up. Mix together with the paddle attachment on low or medium-low speed for about 1 minute. When the yeast is bubbly and fragrant, add the shortening, egg yolks, and vanilla. While the yeast is proofing (check out this tutorial if you’re nervous about using yeast), whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and mace (if you’re using it). Patti, I can see the gears in your brain working all the way from Louisiana and I fully expect a smart-alecky comment/email at some point today. 3 tablespoons of yeast.ĭon’t email me asking if it REALLY is 3 tablespoons of yeast because it really is. In the bowl of a heavy-duty stand mixer, combine warm water, a wee bit of sugar, and yeast. This recipe also called for mace, but I reeeeeally don’t like mace, so I left it out. For the dough, you’ll need bread flour (which has more protein and helps the dough withstand the beating it’s about to take, plus it gives the doughnuts a great, airy texture with a nice chew to them), yeast, baking powder, egg yolks, shortening, table salt, vanilla, and sugar. So if you’re looking for a fun little niche cookbook to keep you busy on rainy afternoons, I totally recommend this one.Īnyway. They take huge-scale recipes and professional methods and adapt them for home kitchens, which is a task in and of itself, and then they succeed, which is even more admirable. It makes doughnut-making a fun challenge rather than a scary endeavor. However, the instructions are incredibly thorough–they use exact measurements (like ingredients by both weight and standard measurements) as well as tactile, practical cues (like descriptions of how the dough should look and feel). I’ll admit that doughnut-making is a tiny bit daunting, and there aren’t a lot of shortcuts or easy outs in this book. I have to say a few things about this cookbook (and I have not been compensated in any way to say any of this) because it’s very rare that a cookbook knocks my socks off. ![]() ![]() So I let my husband choose and he promptly threw the pumpkin doughnuts out the window (boo) and teetered between apple fritters and maple bars before deciding on the almighty bar. And then I realized I wanted to make everything. I had to snatch up a copy and then when it came, I started making a list of the recipes I wanted to make. They remind me of my dad and the occasional Sunday School hooky-playing when we’d have a quick maple bar and Diet Coke before we headed back to the rest of church.Ī few weeks ago, I was browsing cookbooks on Amazon (because it is way too hard to do any effective cookbook browsing when I have kids with me) and stumbled across a cookbook from Top Pot Doughnuts, one of my favorite doughnut shops in Seattle. I don’t even really like the smell of it it reminds me of icky babies that need a bath (don’t ask–anyone who’s spent any in-person time with me will tell you that I have a very irrational sense of smell). If I have a choice between maple syrup and Buttermilk Syrup, I’ll choose the Buttermilk Syrup every time. I have a confession: I am not a huge fan of maple. ![]()

![]() You might experience obsessions related to violence or aggression that might include hurting yourself or others. These are of a sexual nature and often involve images or thoughts that you feel uncomfortable having, even if you wouldn’t act on them. You might fixate on the idea that your behavior has offended God, or that you’ll be punished for what you feel are your sins. But harm obsessions can also involve fears that your locks don’t work or you left the stove on. You might worry about hurting someone else by accidentally putting something toxic in their food, for example. You might worry about touching or encountering something that contains germs, hazardous materials, bodily fluids, or unpleasant but not necessarily harmful substances, like mud. Obsessions tend to fall into the following main categories: Still, the thought keeps returning whenever you see a knife or even enter the kitchen, and you worry you won’t be able to control it. While doing dishes, you worry, “What if I take this knife and drop it on my foot?” You don’t actually want to hurt yourself. To banish your anxiety and avoid the thought, you mentally count to 100 over and over until you relieve some of the distress. They could be violent or sexual in nature. Like intrusive thoughts, obsessions might center on taboo, disturbing, or socially unacceptable ideas. Yet, these are usually more intense and persistent than intrusive thoughts. If you’ve experienced an intrusive thought, you have some understanding of obsessive thoughts. You might try to block them out, suppress them, or distract yourself from them. It may be that you find obsessions can leave you feeling anxious, guilty, or even disgusted. While you may control your response, you might find it challenging to control the thoughts.ĭescribing positive things as obsessions diminishes the emotional turmoil experienced by people who live with obsessions. These involve repeated behaviors, such as touching belongings in a certain order, tapping different parts of your body in sequence, or repeating gestures or phrases. They might involve praying, making lists, constantly reviewing conversations and past events, or countering unwanted thoughts or mental images with “good” images. These might involve repeatedly checking your work for errors, checking your body for changes or signs of illness, or locking doors and turning off appliances and lights again and again. These include specific actions or rituals that involve washing and cleaning your body or your home, workplace, or any other place you spend time. And that's on a planet with perfect habitability. And even on my capital, I might have 20-25 POPs working maintenance just to keep the planet at decent stability. But every drone on amenities via the maintenance job is one less drone doing actual work. On a planet like that, there might be value in increasing stability through amenities. The problem is when a planet has a population of, say, 100 and lots of buildings. I keep only a few drones on amenities (just enough to keep me at 0) and let the rest of the drones do more important jobs. ![]() Now, I do fine with less developed planets. Once you have those, you can actually set a default species right (called Assimilation under the citizenship rights I believe), this will integrate your conquered planets domestic pops into your hivemind.I've been doing well with hive minds, but there is one aspect to running a hive mind that baffles me: amenities and stability. The second option requires 2 ascension perks Engineered Evolution and Evolutionary Mastery. A side note here: terraforming tech leads to the Hive World option, which is REALLY good imo. Obviously, this makes the new conquered species even more unhappy if their planet gets turned into a non-compatible type, so ideally it is important to monitor potential uprisings until you 'officially' take over the planet. The first is, as stated previously, wait for terraforming ability, and 'purge' (use em for food, resettlement, however you want), making the planet suited for your species. This is especially nice if you're using the Federations DLC, as you get a good chunk of diplomatic weight from vassals.Īs far as the territory YOU want to take, there are actually two options. I actually was able to develop a fairly strong vassal on one side of my empire, while then spreading out the other way myself. Until then, any conquering, I did with the goal of 'liberation' (creating a vassal state out of the conquered territories). So biggest thing I found useful was to NOT capture any planets until I had terraforming tech. So actually just finished a hivemind playthrough (tree of life as well). I’m seriously thinking about purging them, but that seems kind of wasteful. I don’t have the megacorp DLC and even if I did the galactic market hasn’t been created yet, so no selling pops. I could just move them to my worlds, but they’d use up a bunch of amenities, reduce stability, and eat more than half of the food they make anyway. It’s going to be a very long time before I have the technology needed to assimilate them into the hivemind. My species likes tropical worlds and their species likes tundra worlds, so this isn’t good. My pops are trying to grow on those planets for some reason. Even if I put trees of life on those planets, I think they’d continue eating more food than they make. Simply leaving them on their worlds and using them as livestock doesn’t seem like a good idea, because the planets have zero stability and the pops are eating more food than they’re making. Normally I’d give them full citizenship and let them carry on with their lives as though nothing happened, but that’s not an option as a hivemind. I’ve recently captured some planets as a hivemind, but I’m not sure what to do with the planets or the pops living on them. ![]() ![]() If you want to try r something more modern, get a small Gemini tattoo in a very exposed place like the wrist or / Instagram 12.
